Membrane depolarizer
Calcium-dependent bacterial membrane depolarizer
Membrane depolarizer — mechanism card
- Gram-positive membrane insertion → rapid depolarization
- Bactericidal, concentration-dependent
- Inactivated by lung surfactant — never used for pneumonia
- Myopathy → monitor CK
- Calcium-dependent depolarization of the bacterial membrane
- Sequestered and inactivated by pulmonary surfactant
- Skeletal muscle myopathy
Drugs with this mechanism (1)
- Daptomycin — Lipopeptide that depolarizes gram-positive membranes; inactivated by surfactant, so never for pneumonia.
