- Replenishes the bile-acid pool with a hydrophilic, non-toxic bile acid
- Reduces biliary cholesterol saturation → can dissolve cholesterol gallstones
- Also cytoprotective for cholangiocytes → treats primary biliary cholangitis
- Dissolves cholesterol gallstones; used in cholestatic liver disease

- Ursodiol — Hydrophilic bile acid that dilutes the toxic bile acid pool.
